- The free events, put on by Dublab, go down at the iconic Union Station.
The final two instalments of Dublab's Music For Train Stations happen at Union Station in downtown LA this Friday and next.
Dublab, the web radio station featured heavily in our recent Real Scenes LA documentary, was inspired by Brian Eno's 1978 record Music For Airports for the March series. That album was meant to diffuse the "tense, anxious atmosphere of an airport terminal with loops of subtle sound including piano, voice and other instruments," says Dublab. The press release describes Music For Train Stations as "both an homage to Eno and a contemporary interpretation of his concept applied within the frenetic energy and architectural splendor of Union Station."
The iconic art deco structure, which has appeared in countless films, will host a set from Carlos Niño this Friday. Niño, a veteran of labels like Ninja Tune and Soul Jazz, will release his next full-length, Flutes, Echoes, It's All Happening, on Leaving Records in April. The 25th sees IDM pioneer Mark Van Hoen, who founded Seafeel and also released seminal electro-ambient records as Locust, stop through the station. The UK ex-pat has been putting out music on well-respected imprints like Touch and Editions Mego and was the subject of a profile by RA's Angus Finlayson a few years ago. He's recently teamed up with Mike Harding under the name drøne, and next month the duo will issue their debut album, Reversing Into The Future, through Sweden's fledgling Pomperipossa Records.
