  • Royal, a short film directed by Flying Lotus, will debut at a Sundance event that runs from August 12th to 14th at the Ace Hotel in Downtown LA. The Brainfeeder boss took to Twitter today to share details of his directorial debut. "It's an awkward love story that's definitely not for the kiddies," he says of the film, which will premiere alongside five others at Sundance NEXT FEST, a three-night film and music festival. Royal is the first project to come out of Brainfeeder's new "film division," he says. The inspiration apparently came from seeing a "pretty awesome" GIF animation of Thom Yorke and himself made by a fan. “I was fixated on this for a whole day and thought, shit, I can make stuff like that," he says. He reached out to cult animator David Firth—who directed the gory video for his track "Ready Err Not"—in search of lessons, and later signed him to the film division as well. Royal comes on the heels of LoveTrue, a documentary scored by Flying Lotus that debuted a the Tribeca Film Festival in April.
