  • Trevor Jackson has dug into his archive of unreleased Playgroup material, with the first in a run of nine EPs coming out on July 22nd. As Jackson explains, the Playgroup material was inspired by "the hedonistic early days of house, disco, post punk, electro and dub." He adds: "The emergence of underground club culture in New York, London, Chicago, Paris and Northern Italy was driven by pioneering DJs playing a wildly diverse soundtrack to a passionate, dance driven and open minded audience. It was a sensory overload of chemicals, bass, smoke, sweat, sex and danger; a testament to the non-air conditioned, non-i-Phone infested and non-corporate clubbing days of yore." The nine Playgroup records will be released across a nine-week stretch, starting on July 22nd and wrapping up on September 16th. The 30 tracks were originally made between 1997 and 2001 during the recording sessions for the first Playgroup album. They've been remastered with some help from In Flagranti's Sasha Crnobrnja. There are a few guest appearances: Four Tet plays guitar on "Little Things," EDMX features on "I Want To Believe" and Crash Course In Science singer Mike Z features on two tracks. After a long break from production, Jackson returned last year with the F O R M A T album, which featured tracks spread across 12 different musical formats including USB, VHS and reel-to-reel. Last year he also oversaw a compilation titled Science Fiction Dancehall Classics for Adrian Sherwood's label, On-U Sound. Listen to Jackson's megamix previewing the EPs.
