  • The first Vancouver Alternative Pride will go down around the city starting on Friday, July 29th. Matt Troy, the promoter behind Backdoor and the Vancouver Art & Leisure venue, has gathered a host of queer events together for Alternative Pride, meant as a counterpoint to the more mainstream choices that take up the event schedule on Pride weekend. For a few events, he's also brought in out-of-town talent. On Friday, July 29th, at VAL, Pride Is For Everyone will return with New York crew Cultivated Sound, who will be represented by Mara and RTMC. Locals Nancy Dru, DJ D.Dee, Cherchez La Femme, LVT and a handful of others will be on support. The next evening, Portland's David Sylvester will headline the Downlow Masquerade in the basement of Celebrities, and then on Sunday Backdoor will move to a new venue, The Villa in Railtown, for a special Pride edition featuring Dickslap promoter Nark, AKA Kevin Kauer, in from Seattle. Over the weekend, Alternative Pride will also throw a Trans Pride party, a dancehall night called Prancehall and a daytime event called Elastic Pride at Fortune Sound Club. The Alternative Pride series comes as a number of groups have vocally chosen not to partake in the official Pride festivities, protesting the presence of a police float in the parade.
