Mark Barrott has put together a compilation with Pete Gooding called Hostel La Torre Ibiza: Volumen Uno.
The 15-track selection features the music Barrott plays at his Thursday residency at Hostel La Torre, a venue located on the west coast of Ibiza. Barrott's sets soundtrack the sunset, so there's a balmy feel to his choices, with music from DJ Harvey, Domenique Dumont, Francis Bebey, Finis Africae, Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Barrott himself.
"I don't really consider myself a DJ, yet the chance to soundtrack the sunset for 16 weeks a year was an opportunity too good to pass up," Barrott says of his residency. "And little did I know when I started, how influential it would become on my music making and in particular, this summer’s second Sketches From An Island album."
He adds: "Getting the chance to see first-hand how people react to this kind of music, particularly around sunset time, became hugely inspirational, and as winter became spring, I was approached by Javier (the owner of La Torre) and Pete Gooding (in charge of the music policy) to help put together the compilation. It's an eclectic mix, but one that really grasps the essence and spirit of what we're trying to achieve at La Torre on a nightly basis."
The compilation is the first release on a label called Hostel La Torre Recordings. It'll arrive this September on CD, digital and gatefold vinyl.
