Label boss Nan Kolè and South African selector DJ Lag will showcase the new sound of Durban.
The label, which launched last year, has released two compilations of gqom, a regional style of club music from Durban, South Africa, that's found favor with DJs abroad. The Sound Of Durban Vol. 1 came out in January, and a follow-up, the Woza Mixtape, landed in July. It's run by Italian DJ Nan Kolè, AKA Francesco Cucchi, alongside South Africa-based Lerato Phiri.
Gqom Oh! will present a series of gigs in Europe and Asia this fall with Kolè himself spinning alongside Durban selector DJ Lag. It all begins on October 21st at Unsound Festival in Krakow, followed by sets at Panorama Bar in Berlin, Music Box in Lisbon and Clock Strikes 13 in London. Next up is the Club To Club Festival in Torino, then one more stop in Brescia, Italy before they head to Asia. They're at Dada Bar in Beijing on November 11th, then Shanghai, Tokyo and a closing date at Cake Shop in Seoul.
The Woza Mixtape was originally compiled as the soundtrack to a documentary produced by Italian radio station Crudo Volta. Watch the film, which documents the link between taxi drivers and the rise of gqom music.
