- One man has been charged with drug supply offences after hundreds of people were cleared from the Kings Cross venue on Saturday night.
Police raided Sydney club Candys Apartment over the weekend, forcing it to close for 72 hours over drug supply concerns.
According to local news reports, around 40 NSW Police officers entered the Kings Cross venue on Saturday night, citing concerns that the premises was being used for drug supply. Officers arrested a 21-year-old man outside the club for allegedly being in possession of 60 MDMA capsules, later charging him with 22 drug offences. The raid comes three months into an investigation into drug supply in the Kings Cross area dubbed Strike Force Roby.
Keep Sydney Open, an organisation fighting Sydney's lock-out laws, was quick to comment on the raid. "It's clear that last night’s raid on Candys Apartment was completely unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer's money," a Facebook statement read. "One single drug arrest does not justify the dramatic operation undertaken by police, no matter how it's explained. There are numerous other ways in which such an operation could have been conducted to avoid alarming patrons or hitting the pockets of hardworking artists and staff."
