  • SXSW has released a new statement promising to change its artist contracts in 2018. The Austin festival came under fire last week after an artist boycotted SXSW because of a clause in its artist contract which said that international artists performing at unsanctioned shows could be reported to immigration authorities. After CEO Roland Swenson said that the clause has been part of the contract for years and that SXSW has never reported anyone to immigration authorities, a new statement says that the controversial clause will be removed from next year's contract. After reaffirming their opposition to President Trump's renewed temporary travel ban, the festival promises to "remove the option of notifying immigration authorities in situations where a foreign artist might 'adversely affect the viability of Artist’s official showcase.'" They still note that they will notify local authorities in matters of "safety issues," but also that it "is not SXSW's duty or authority to escalate a matter beyond local authorities." The festival also says it does not and has never worked with or "colluded" with any immigration or border authorities. "We would like to again apologize for the language in our agreements," the statement adds. "We care deeply about the community we serve, and our event is a welcome and safe space for all people."
