- The first release from Silent Street will look over the post-punk band's early '80s singles for Y Records.
Kiran Sande and Chris Farrell's new label Silent Street will launch with a collection of music from Bristol post-punk band Maximum Joy.
Sande, the founder of Blackest Ever Black and Farrell, who owns Bristol record shop and distribution hub Idle Hands, will kick off their new venture with a collection called I Can't Stand It Here On Quiet Nights. They refer to Maximum Joy as a "shared musical lodestar," describing the band's mix of "punk, modern jazz, disco, dub, funk, soul, early hip-hop, Afrobeat and chansons" as "some of the greatest, most intoxicating pop music ever made."
I Can’t Stand It Here On Quiet Nights focuses on a run of three singles released on Y Singles in 1981 and 1982. The first, Stretch, was licensed to influential US label 99 Records and became a NYC underground hit. "Silent Street / Silent Dub," which names the label, is an ode to summer nights in St Pauls, the Bristol suburb where Idle Hands is based now. The Silent Street compilation will come with liner notes by Maximum Joy members Janine Rainforth, Tony Wrafter and Kevin Pearce.
