  • The final part in Kölsch's autobiographical album trilogy for Kompakt is due out next month. After revisiting early childhood memories with 2013's 1977—the year of his birth—and looking back at his travels around Europe with 2015's 1983, Rune Reilly Kölsch's latest full-length, 1989, focuses on his turbulent early-teenage years. Besides the challenges of puberty, the Danish artist had to cope with his parents' divorce. Kölsch, who grew up in Copenhagen, describes the period as "a difficult time in my life, where I mostly just remember the greyness of it all... I would escape that grey world on my skateboard, listen to my Walkman as I explored the city around me. Music became my saviour—the only way to overcome my family's hard times. I found a soundtrack to my grey life, and suddenly there was colour." The album, which includes a handful of tracks titled "grey" in different languages, sees Kölsch continue his collaboration with Gregor Schwellenbach, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and fellow Kompakt affiliate who appeared on 1983. Schwellenbach conducts the Heritage Orchestra, a 24-piece group that features on four tracks. He also has a co-writing and co-production credit on "Serji." One other tune, "In Bottles," features vocals from Aurora Aksnes.
