Cycling '74 has announced that the latest version of the Max visual programming language will be available in the first half of 2018.
The news follows yesterday's announcement of Ableton Live 10, whose beta is running a preliminary version of Max 8. While the user-facing features appear unchanged in the beta, Cycling '74 says Max 8 is operating in the background, allowing the developers to thoroughly test the new software. The developers have not disclosed any new features but say details will emerge in the coming months.
Originally designed at IRCAM in the '80s, Max is the program of choice for musicians and artists exploring advanced sound design, featuring prominently in the work of artists like Autechre and Mark Fell. Apart from music, Max is commonly used in installations and visual media.
