- Coventry University bestowed the honour on the late BBC Radiophonic Workshop member today.
The late composer and sound designer Delia Derbyshire has been awarded an honorary PhD.
She received the doctorate posthumously today from Coventry University, the Guardian reports. The university is also launching a series of school workshops named after Derbyshire, which aim to encourage an interest in music and maths in children.
Derbyshire is best known as a member of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and her work on the Doctor Who theme song. But she was also a key player in England's nascent electronic music scene for over a decade, working on compositions for screen and stage with the likes of Peter Zinovieff and Brian Hodgson.
Derbyshire was born in Coventry in 1937. 15 years after her death, in 2001, the city named a street after her.
