- The West End nightspots, which are being punished for excessive noise, have also been issued with fines totalling €9,051.
Nine venues in Ibiza's San Antonio district will be forced to close temporarily this summer as part of a continued crackdown on excessive noise pollution.
Though the nightspots haven't been named, they're all in the West End, a long strip of clubs and bars popular with tourists. According to Diario De Ibiza, the length of closure varies from venue to venue—six will shut for one day only, while another closes for two weeks—but the stipulated period must begin on or after Friday, June 1st. In addition, the venues have been hit with fines totalling €9,051.
The local council is still processing noise complaints for another 44 venues, 28 of which could carry penalties of temporary closure totalling 93 days. In terms of fines, the 44 venues would have to pay €34,480 between them.
These sanctions are part of a wider plan, which also includes tougher sound restrictions and reduced opening hours, to quieten the tourist-friendly zone. The new measures are expected to come into play in February, transforming San Antonio into a Special Acoustic Protection Zone (ZPAE).
