- The US producer's new venture "aims to release everything except the commonly accepted, traditional forms of late 20th/early 21st-century dance music."
Brian Leeds, AKA US leftfield house and ambient producer Huerco S, is starting a label called West Mineral Ltd.
West Mineral's debut release is an album, Make Me Know You Sweet, from Leeds' Pendant alias, which has surfaced just once before, on the now-rare 2016 ambient tape bblisss. It's described in an announcement as a "vessel for introspection" that "taps into a latent, esoteric vein of American spirituality." One of its tracks, "KVL-LWQ," includes additional production from Pontiac Streator, an artist from Kansas City, where Leeds used to live before his move to New York. The album lands this Friday on double-vinyl and digital formats.
The label "aims to release everything except the commonly accepted, traditional forms of late 20th/early 21st-century dance music" while highlighting efforts from its boss and an inner circle of friends and affiliates. "It's best described as mid-ground music," says today's announcement, "As opposed to the putative background purpose of ambient styles, or the upfront physicality of dance music."
Leeds, whose last proper LP For Those Of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have) came out on Proibito in 2016, first revealed plans for a new imprint of his own alongside a podcast he mixed for Inverted Audio last summer.
