  • Jon Dixon, a Detroit pianist and keyboardist and member of the Underground Resistance live band Timeline, is toasting the legendary jazz trumpeter Marcus Belgrave with a tribute EP for Planet E. Erudition: A Tribute To Marcus Belgrave includes tracks that feature recordings of Belgrave, who died in 2015 at age 78, along with appearances from UR founding member Mike Banks, Timeline saxophonist De'Sean Jones and Detroit-based trumpeter, composer and educator Kris Johnson. It's due out near the end of the month. Belgrave, a Pennsylvania native, moved to Detroit in 1963 and for decades was a key part of the Motor City's jazz scene. His career included stints working and performing with the likes of Ray Charles, Charles Mingus and Wynton Marsalis—and he had some history with Planet E boss Carl Craig. Dixon performed under Belgrave's direction as part of the Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orchestra. Listen to EP track "When Belgrave Met Banks."
