The six-part series illustrates the trajectory of early-onset dementia through sound.
It's the fourth installment in a conceptual series evoking the deterioration of memory that occurs with dementia. More specifically, it tells the story of The Caretaker, a character that Kirby invented based on the hotel caretaker from Steven King's The Shining. In this, the fourth stage of deterioration, he has slipped into a phase of cognitive breakdown called "post awareness."
"The ability to recall singular memories gives way to confusions and horror," says Kirby's label, History Always Favours The Winners. "It's the beginning of a process where all memories begin to become more fluid through entanglements, repetition and rupture."
There are three 20-minute tracks called "Post Awareness Confusions" interrupted by a "Temporary Bliss State," which "starkly contrasts the other parts in a coherently lush traverse of ambient crackle and glittering melody," the label continues.
