The drone duo are marking the 20-year anniversary of Southern Lord Records with fresh, high-fidelity editions of two early records.
The albums first came out in 2003 and 2004 respectively through Anderson's Southern Lord Records, and were initially conceived as "acoustic" works. But as the story goes, the recording sessions in Oregon, which featured a number of guest musicians, "quickly took a far different route toward the psychedelic and the electronic/synthetic." The resulting LPs are now seen as signaling an embrace of a more ambitious and expansive approach than the duo's previous efforts. (White2 was also their first record to feature Attila Csihar, who has since become their main vocalist.)
O'Malley and Anderson are revisiting the two albums to help celebrate Southern Lord's 20-year anniversary. They gave the original mixes of the material to Matt Colton, who remastered them with the high-fidelity half-speed method at London's Alchemy Studios. "The sound is clearer, sharper, more direct," says the label. The remastered LPs will be out on wax in a range of colors next month.
In the years since White1 and White2, Sunn O))) has regularly rubbed up against the world of avant-garde electronics. Oren Ambarchi was an integral part of the group in the mid-'00s. O'Malley collaborated with the late Mika Vainio and has released solo music on Demdike Stare's DDS label and Editions Mego.
