- The Swiss Museum & Center for Electronic Music Instruments has launched a Kickstarter to bring the project to fruition.
The Swiss Museum & Center for Electronic Music Instruments (SMEM) is seeking support to build a public studio.
Located in Fribourg, Switzerland, SMEM is said to hold the world's largest collection of synthesisers and studio electronics. The non-profit organisation is home to over 5000 synths, which are housed in an underground bunker that Legowelt has described as "like that ending scene of Indiana Jones with the giant hall of relics—but then with synths."
Now SMEM is seeking support to build what they're calling the Playroom, "a place dedicated to learning about, playing with, and sharing the incredible history of electronic music instruments." Apart from hosting lectures, workshops and classes, the Playroom will be available to hire for private recording sessions. The space will be filled with a rotating selection of synths and recording gear from the SMEM collection. Annual memberships will be available, but one-off visits are possible, too.
If the Kickstarter is successful, (it's currently 19 percent of the way towards a €42,655 target), the space will officially open on November 1st. As part of the promotion, Legowelt is recording a limited edition LP at SMEM, which will be available to project backers. Other rewards include securing the chance to work with a synth of your choice from the SMEM collection and sessions in the Playroom.
