  • András and Instant Peterson have pulled together another compilation of obscure Australian music for Efficient Space. This one looks to the "darker sounds and later nights" of the '90s and beyond, the label says. While its predecessor, Midnite Spares, dug up Australian avant-pop and electronic oddities from the '80s and '90s, 3AM Spares documents a period in which a "generation of producers, DJs, clubbers and ravers spilled out into pavilions, warehouses and paddocks, embracing a new culture of machine-metaphor and chemical love." The collection draws from local 12-inch releases, CD-Rs and the archives of the 3RRR FM station where András and Instant Peterson co-host a weekly show, Strange Holiday. 3AM Spares leads off with a track from Future Sound of Melbourne's debut 12-inch, which garnered label offers from Jeff Mills, Frank De Wulf and Carl Cox. It includes output from labels like lan Analogue, Creative Vibes, Volition, DanceNet, Juice and Psy-Harmonic as well as obscure one-off projects seemingly conceived for inclusion on local compilations. Andy Rantzen, who had an archival release on Efficient Space last year, appears in collaboration with General Electrik. Listen to clips over at wordandsound.
