Norway's Smalltown Supersound label has tapped Prins Thomas for a mix marking the imprint's 25th anniversary.
The Oslo-based label run by Joakim Haugland has released experimental music, ambient, rock, jazz and dance music over the years, making Thomas, who has worked with Norwegian jazz musicians and remixed Dungen, a natural choice for the landmark mix, which runs through 80 tracks over three hours and 40 minutes. (Thomas has also put out an album a year on Smalltown Supersound since 2016—Principe Del Norte, a collaborative LP with Bjørn Torske and the Bugge Wesseltoft & Prins Thomas LP.)
The Movement Of The Free Spirit takes its title from a 10-inch Smalltown released in the year 2000 from The Dead C's Bruce Russell, who had borrowed the phrase from the Situationist activist and author Raoul Vaneigem. Thomas pulls in a remarkably diverse array of artists for the set, including Sonic Youth, DJ Harvey, Studio, Yoshimi (Boredoms), Kim Gordon, Oneohtrix Point Never, Todd Rundgren, Stereolab, High Llamas, Neneh Cherry, Ricardo Villalobos, Four Tet, Bjørn Torske, Dungen, The Orb, Kelly Lee Owens, Lindstrøm, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Biosphere and Peter Brötzmann. He pulls from throughout the catalogue, including music from Yoshinori Hayashi and Neneh Cherry's respective albums forthcoming on the label.
Haugland says, "Thomas has followed the label since the early beginnings. Back in the days I was always thinking: 'He's a house/disco DJ—why does he want my noise records?' I realize now I wasn't smart enough to understand his scope... While I have always struggled to describe what the label is, only now—with this mix—I can finally say: This is what it is."
The Movement Of The Free Spirit will be released as a CD box set, digitally (both mixed and unmixed) and disc one will be available as an LP.
