- Beware Of Ninja was ordered to pay €15,000 in damages for unauthorised use of the German bouncer's likeness.
Beware Of Ninja, the company behind the Berghain-inspired card game Bergnein, has been ordered to pay €15,000 in damages to bouncer Sven Marquardt.
Originally called Berghain Ze Game, Bergnein is a card game in which players play the role of a bouncer at the famous Berlin club. A card depicting Marquardt, included without his consent, was featured alongside a selection of hand-drawn ravers, who players decide to allow or deny entry. Marquardt successfully sued Beware Of Ninja for damages, with the ruling handed down by Sweden's Gothenburg District Court. The company must also pay court costs and destroy all copies of the game, which was first released in 2016, in its possession.
"Satire is dead in Sweden," Alexander Kandiloros, the game's creator, told Sweden's Musikguiden radio show, labelling the ruling "absurd."
Open since 2004, Berghain is the world's best-known club for house and techno. Marquardt, the lead bouncer, is one of its faces, known for enforcing the club's infamous door policy.
