  • Author Tim Lawrence is releasing a soundtrack for his book Life & Death On The New York Dance Floor. The release will come in two double-LP volumes on vinyl, one out this week, and the other in January. (A double-CD version will also be released in January.) The soundtrack features key tracks and artists profiled in Lawrence's book, which chronicles New York's Downtown music scene in the early '80s. Among those included are Alan Vega, David Byrne, James White & The Blacks, Loose Joints, Material, Peech Boys and Arthur Russell projects Dinosaur L and Loose Joints. Lawrence is starting a new label, Reappearing Records, in order to release the compilation. "This is the first time I've had the opportunity to release a record in tandem with a book," Lawrence told Resident Advisor, "and I'm pretty thrilled with how the Life & Death On The New York Dance Floor compilation has turned out. It was never going to be easy to reproduce the insane range of mutant sounds that took root in New York City during the early 1980s, but the compilation captures some of the startlingly creative developments that came about as the post-disco, art-punk and nascent hip-hop scenes came into contact with each other and started to collaborate. This was the period when NYC—cheap, raw, community-minded, vibrant and open for partying—finally realized its melting pot potential. The music still sounds radical today." Listen to the "Dance Mix" of David Byrne's "Big Business."
