Technics unveiled a new, DJ-oriented version of its classic SL-1200 turntable, the MK7, at CES in Las Vegas today.
The all-black turntable features a new coreless direct drive motor and reverse playback capability, as well as "other sound-enhancing technologies," according to Technics parent company Panasonic. Otherwise, Panasonic says it's much the same as previous SL-1200 models, with the company stating, "We wouldn't dream of drastically changing one of the most renowned products in music history," at CES, according to DJ Tech Tools.
The improved direct drive motor reportedly has increased "rotation accuracy, powerful torque [and] high reliability... eliminating the need for parts replacement and maintenance," according to Panasonic's press release. The stylus illuminator features a white LED with brighter lighting than past models, and Panasonic also promises improved vibration damping to avoid disruption during DJing.
Panasonic had previously discontinued manufacture of the SL-1200s before launching a luxury version aimed at audiophiles in 2016, in addition to a handful of other more expensive turntable products.

There's no word on a release date or price point for the new turntable yet.
