  • Elektron is releasing a new groovebox. Due out in February for €460, Model:Samples continues the Swedish company's push to the more affordable end of the gear spectrum, following on from the Digitone and Digitakt. Using either 300 preset digital samples from Splice or user-uploaded sounds, Model:Samples provides six tracks for programming rhythms and sequences. Each function has its own knob—a first for Elektron, known for its elaborate operating systems—most of which are dedicated to manipulating samples and effects. A multimode filter, LFO and two FX sends are on-hand for shaping the sound, while MIDI in, out and thru are available for syncing with other machines. In addition to six velocity-sensitive pads for programming beats, Elektron's signature parameter locking feature can be accessed via the 64-step sequencer. A new function called Chance has been included, which appears to be a variation on Elektron's probability-based sequencing found on earlier devices. Watch a video on the Model:Samples.
