  • A new suite of synths have been added to the latest update of Arturia's V Collection bundle. First up is a software version of the EMS Synthi, a briefcase modular from the early '70s with a distinctive pin-based modulation matrix. Known for its rugged, unstable oscillators and penchant for abstract sound effects, Arturia's version adds modern touches such as syncable LFOs, effects and an in-built step sequencer.
Next comes the Mellotron, a '60s-era keyboard that played back tape reels of recordings of acoustic instruments such as flute and cello. Thanks to the tape's wow and flutter, the Mellotron's sound is instantly recognisable and was used thoroughly by The Beatles and King Crimson. Arturia's version lets you dial in the character with controls for flutter, tape saturation and noise floor, a choice of Leslie speaker and Fender Twin amps and a dedicated virtual pedal board.
Another notable addition is the Casio CZ, which models the Japanese company's take on phase distortion synthesis. While phase distortion was easier to program than the frequency modulation method behind the Yamaha DX7, Arturia's model adds a graphic interface to streamline the programming process. A host of additional features, such as increased polyphony and extra envelopes, LFOs and filters, further expands the capabilities of the original design.
The new additions join previously released V Collection synths like the Synclavier, Buchla Music Easel and Minimoog. The full collection will cost $399 until June 10th before increasing to the regular price of $499. Expect a lower price if you already own Arturia products. Read our review of V Collection 6.
