  • Output has released a new plug-in called Portal. The Los Angeles-based software company's latest product is a granular effects processor designed for maximum accessibility. The powerful synthesis technique, which splits audio into thin splices and are then rearranged in new ways, excels at abstract sound design, but Portal attempts to gear it toward more digestible purposes. Output says it's centred on "re-synthesizing sounds to give you a result that's more closely related to the original input" and to expect "less random bloops and bleeps and more creative music making." Centred on an easy-to-use X-Y macro control that's linked to multiple parameters under the hood, Portal also has a page for advanced controls, giving you the control set you'd expect from your average granular synth. Apart from tuning grains to musical scales and tempo-syncing delays, there's an extensive set of presets tuned for processing whole tracks, synths, drums and more. Learn more about Portal in Output's overview video.
Portal is out now for $149 from the Output website. Last year Output released a software synth called Arcade, which it described as "Netflix or Hulu for music makers."
