  • Toshifumi Hinata's Broken Belief is out on Music From Memory in early September. The collection, which was co-compiled by Chee Shimizu, focuses on the Japanese multi-instrumentalist's 1985 through 1987 period, during which he released three well-loved albums, Sarah's Crime, Chat D'Ete and Reality In Love. After attending Berklee College of Music, Hinata would become "disillusioned with his classical training," the label says. "Moving away from depending simply on acoustic instruments, he would instead become entrenched in the possibilities of the latest analog synthesizers being developed at the time." Starting out with minimal kit like the Prophet 5 and LinnDrum, "Hinata would record various sounds on analog tapes and overdub many different layers; recording violin, piano and other accompaniments separately later on." Hinata currently lives in Tokyo and focuses on making music for documentaries. Listen to clips from Broken Belief.
