Shigeru Ishihara and Kiki Hitomi's LP draws influence from traditional Japanese history and mythology.
Essaka Hoisa, which follows 2017's debut Shinsekai and the 2018 self-titled EP, draws influence and imagery from traditional Japanese history and mythology. Its name is taken from the cry of kago carriers—people who carried ruling-class or religious dignitaries over great distances.
"We keep on going and shouting essaka hoisa together with partners, our kin, friends and people that we walk together and carrying on our life with laughter and tears," Hitomi said. "No matter what, I am carrying on my life. I won't give up and keep on going, keep on making, keep on learning with hollering the word essaka hoisa."
Ishihara, AKA DJ Scotch Egg, is a member of the post-rock band Seefeel and has released solo records on Load Records. Hitomi was a member of King Midas Sound and is cofounder of the dubstep-noise duo Dokkebi Q. Essaka Hoisa is the band's first album without their former drummer Andrea Belfi.
