Nicolas Jaar is exhibiting new work at Het HEM in Zaandam, Netherlands.
Het HEM, which opened this past June, is a multi-purpose art space in a former munitions factory. The program changes several times per year, presented as "Chapters" co-created with guest curators and artists-in-residence. For Het HEM's second phase ("Chapter 2WO"), the space has invited Nicolas Jaar, whose work will exhibit from September 19th through December 1st.
Jaar's ten weeks at Het HEM is an "experiment in open research," according to the venue. The artist will work alongside the Shock Forest Group, a band of cartographers, coders, sound makers, biologists, geneticists, graphic designers and engineers, to survey the space's immediate surroundings and create a sound piece from its historical, sociological, archeological and geographical data. Throughout the program, research results will be presented as tools, lectures, guided tours and musical performances.
Jaar will also have two new pieces available to view: a sound and light installation called "Incomprehensible Sun," and a film made with Rolando Hernandez that documents his visit to Paul Klee's Angelus Novus drawing from 1920, entitled "Angelus Exul." Visitors can also experience an area filled with Jaar's sound pieces, called "Phase Transitions."
Additionally, there will be special performances at Het HEM during Amsterdam Dance Event. From October 17th to 19th, Jaar will present "Retaining The Energy, But Losing The Image" a joint sound and light installation created with Vincent de Belleval.
