- Author Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon will no longer proceed with plans for a fictional adaptation after blowback from the Bay Area electronic music community.
Acclaimed authors Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon have signed a development deal with CBS that includes a series or movie on the Ghost Ship warehouse fire.
The deal with CBS Television Studios includes several projects helmed by the husband-wife team, including an adaption of Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay for Showtime, reports The Mercury News. However, the series on Ghost Ship has been met with protest from the electronic music community in the Bay Area and beyond.
Both Waldman and Chabon responded to the uproar, with the former's statement indicating the series or movie will be based on Elizabeth Weil's sympathetic New York Times Magazine profile of Max Harris, who was recently acquitted in a trial in which he and Ghost Ship operator Derick Almena were charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
The Ghost Ship warehouse fire, which occurred just over three years ago, took the lives of Bay Area artists like Cherushii, Nackt and Cash Askew of Them Are Us Too.
