  • The legendary retail music chain Tower Records has reopened as an online store, Pitchfork reports. The new platform will feature livestream performances and an online version of the franchise's magazine, Pulse!, in addition to selling vinyl, CDs, cassette tapes and exclusive merch. "[The online store] has been met with tremendous success and feedback," Tower Records' CEO Danny Zeijdel says. "A lot of people are so happy taking pictures of when they receive an order from Tower Records posting it on Instagram." The chain originally scheduled to launch as various pop-up shops during SXSW—plans which were halted due to the pandemic. Founded in 1960 in Sacramento, California, Tower Records has been closed since 2006, when the company filed for bankruptcy and liquidation. Though all 89 of the chain's US stores have remained shuttered for over a decade, the physical store still operates in Japan, which became independent from the main chain in 2002.
