The latest 'Across Borders' comp on Audio Therapy showcases progressive talent from The Netherlands. Hang on. Wasn’t that supposed to be Germany?
Dave Seaman’s progressive house label Audio Therapy launched its ‘Across Borders’ compilation series last year. The idea behind it is that each volume focuses on progressive talent from a single country. First pick Greece proved to be the ideal starter: home to some of the best young guns of the progressive scene including Kosmas Epsilon, Dousk, Christian Cambas and Stel, ‘Across Borders’ challenged the notion that the only guys making prog were the old guard in Nottingham and Florida.
When news surfaced that the next Across Borders would be from Germany, RA licked its lips in anticipation. After all, who can forget the pivotal slices of prog made by Oliver Lieb, Der Dritte Raum or Humate in the nineties?
But when ‘Across Borders’ volume two arrived at RA HQ there had been a surprising change of gameplan. Splashed across the cover was the title 'Audio Therapy presents Across Borders - The Netherlands'. Curious, we fired off a missive to Audio Therapy. So guys, what happened to Germany?
"Germany was meant to be next, then the Netherlands, but we had a general lack of interest from the Germans," explains label manager Scott Dawson. "Our deadline was getting quite tight so we tentatively started asking Dutch producers as well. Soon we had a full CD put together so we went ahead and finalised Netherlands as the second release."
Luckily for Audio Therapy, runner-up The Netherlands has come through with the goods. Sander Kleinenberg's '4 Seasons EP' featuring the classic 'My Lexicon' first showed the world Dutch producers had the knack for anthemic prog. Kleinenberg, DJ Remy and Lucien Foort were names frequently seen jutting out of record bins in the late nineties and it's not surprising that all three feature on the new Across Borders release. The unmixed compilation also includes tracks from the new breed of Dutch producers such as Matthew Dekay and 16 Bit Lolitas.
