  • A new warehouse venue is opening in Copenhagen this spring. Located in an old shipyard factory on the island of Refshaleøen, Poolen is a 2,500-capacity space from the team behind local venues Pumpehuset and Byhaven. Another venue, Stagebox, previously occupied the site. The aim, according to the promoters, is to host concerts, raves and other events across 100 days a year. Reinier Zonneveld will play the opening on Wednesday, May 8th, as part of a new event series called The Wheel—a collaboration between local festivals Distortion and Karrusel. "I come from a music environment and culture where we moved into the city's industrial areas and took over abandoned factories," said Poolen's CEO, Kristoffer Bramsen. "Copenhagen changed from an industrial city to the world's best metropolis, and the opportunities for wildness, celebration and loud music became limited. The factories are gone, and the industrial areas have turned into residential neighbourhoods." He added: "With Poolen, Copenhagen gets its last big, raw warehouse venue—only with a proper organisation and facilities that meet modern audience demands and can accommodate the biggest international productions. The warehouse is transformed with the ambition of embracing the rave community—rough, adventurous and loud." Also scheduled to play in 2024 are Future Islands (May 18th), Kiasmos (September 22nd), Lågsus (November 1st) and Danish rap group Malk de Koijn (November 15th).
