'We'll keep fighting': Berlin club MUENZE at risk of eviction due to development plans

- Berlin club MUENZE is fighting back against development proposals that would lead to its eviction. Spearheaded by German jazz musician Till Brönner and the national Jazz Union, the proposals would see MUENZE—plus the other tenants of 15,000-square-metre cultural venue Alte Münze—evicted to make way for a house of jazz. The club has launched a petition in opposition to the plans, and has also received the backing of the Berlin Club Commission. "MUENZE calls for a long-term perspective with regards to maintaining Alte Münze as a club and cultural location," the commission said in a statement. "We support this project and welcome the opportunity to continue using the Alte Münze site for many years to come." MUENZE, which has been hosting club events for more than a decade, has parties with the likes of DJ Fuckoff, Clara Cuvé, MCR-T and Bitter Babe scheduled for the coming weeks. The venue is also used for theatre, opera, cinema and performance art, among many other cultural activities. "We don't want all of that to be replaced with a house of jazz," MUENZE's cultural director, Alexander Kruger, told Resident Advisor. "There are so many other places in the city that they could use for this, why does it need to be Alte Münze, a place that we have developed from scratch over the last ten years and turned into a flourishing cultural institution? There was always this feeling that they thought they were better than us. This high culture versus low culture attitude." Kruger called for the city of Berlin to protect the current tenants by granting them a long-term rental contract. "We'll keep fighting for safe, organically grown spaces for art and club culture," he said. "We want to prevent Berlin from becoming another Disneyland."
