Matthew Dear, Carl Craig, Joakim cover Bowie on a new compilation on Rapster. Life Beyond Mars: Bowie Covered drops in early July.
Bowie might seem like an odd pick for electronic cover versions, but his relationship with electronics runs a lot deeper than his disastrous late ‘90s techno album Earthling. In the late seventies, Bowie’s Berlin trilogy especially dabbled with the genre: especially on the second sides of Heroes and Low, which were Krautrock-inspired instrumentals.
But it’s not just tracks from Bowie's late '70s peak which get a rinsing. NYC discoist bravely takes on ‘Magic Dance’ from Bowie’s Labyrinth soundtrack (1986), while Heartbreak covers ‘Loving the Alien’ from Tonight (1984). "The selected artist could choose any track from his catalog and create their own fresh interpretation, however faithful to, or different from the original,” explains Rapster.
You can preview Matthew Dear, Kelley Polar, Joakim and Au Revoir Simone tracks, as well as download an MP3 of Richard Walters & Faultline's take on ‘Be My Wife’ at Rapster’s dedicated Life on Mars site.
