The story behind one of Berlin's most famous clubs.
Watergate is one of Berlin's most celebrated nightclubs. It wasn't always clear that this was going to be the case. At first, they tried out having drum & bass nights—a genre on the decline at the time in the German capital. They were also in an area—Kreuzberg—that raised eyebrows in a scene dominated by clubs located in other, more fashionable locations. A tightening of the programming to high-grade house and techno, a stunning river view and an LED ceiling later, though, and it has become the stuff of legend. As Watergate begins the celebration of its anniversary with a free concert from Henrik Schwarz' live band this Saturday, we took the opportunity to catch up with Uli Wombacher—the club's main booker—to talk about the history of the club.
