  • Matias Aguayo's vocal-inflected, infectiously rhythmic music doesn't fit into any particular genre, and it's all the more appealing for it. For Euro-centric dance music fans and followers of Kompakt, he can feel like an occasional breath of fresh air. Take a broader view, though, and you'll see that Aguayo never really slows down, and his projects are numerous. With Cómeme, the label that sprung up from his BumBumBox parties in Argentina and elsewhere in South America, he's helped a seemingly disparate crew of producers and DJs develop singular sounds. He's also a fixture on the circuit in countries like Mexico and Colombia, touring consistently in places plenty of international DJs might hit only once in their careers. But with Legende, his latest EP, Aguayo is stepping back into the musical milieu where he first found fame: the ruminative sound of classic Kompakt and Cologne, the city Aguayo thinks of as his hometown as much as anywhere. Jordan Rothlein spoke at length about the project with Aguayo in Berlin recently, which sparked a conversation that challenged the very notion that dance music culture has a single center.
