Various Artists - Dumb Unit Dynasty EP 2 The four cuts on Dynasty EP 2 aren't the kind of tracks that cause you to hit "next" after a bar or so. They are, however, the type which will induce a yearning for individuality after they've faded to silence. Kicking things off, Dumb Unit's owner Jeremy P. Caulfield teams up with Cesare "vs Disorder" Marchese for "Young Pretenders." The track is laced together with a funky-enough bassline, but its ambiguous vocal echoes and slow-fading neon synth stabs fail to impart much memorability. Caulfield's edit of "What You Want" is a tad more locomotive, reaching for jabbing hats rather than bass. Here, reverbed synths billow through most of the track's duration. Nice enough, but they never really coalesce into anything in particular, leaving just the unchanging syncopation to entertain.

On the other side, Queen Atom―another of Marchese's guises―pulls similar tricks, roping in a brisk off-beat vocal sample and occasionally letting it spool out into a frustrated monologue in "What Do U Want." The Piano Edit fares better, introducing serene, twinkling patches of piano. Still, these can't erase the slipshod vocal samples, and nor does it help that the once-multi-note bass sequence has been stripped back to a sparse, one-note chiming. Better than most set fodder, though not by much.
