- While you may not have loved every single idea crammed onto Specialize, B-Tracks' debut EP from last fall—and to be certain, from Detroit-inspired sampling to big-room laser-light shows, there were a whole lot of them—you probably found something on there that really spoke to you. But whatever you took away from Specialize, Come Back, B-Tracks' follow-up, likely does it better. If their last effort found the Boston-based duo of John Barera and Soren Jahan still in search of their sound, then Come Back represents a zeroing-in, though not at the expense of the youthful vigor that made Specialize such a pleasure.
From the moment the title cut commences its soft pulse and smirking bassline, you know B-Tracks have hit on something special. Unfurling with great care and surprising intensity, Come Back has a dialed-back restlessness that will be familiar to anyone who's dabbled in FaltyDL's house excursions. Tempo and urgency rise on "Crisis," which cloaks old-school electronics and hand-drumming in high-flying synthesizer runs. "The Next Step" bears the most resemblance of anything here to the vibe of Specialize, all forward motion and loping, soulful bassline. "When the Time Comes" finds B-Tracks once again scratching their techno itch, but rather than pack tight their expansive soundscape, they give their sounds room to stretch out and get weird.
