Kirk Degiorgio - The Golden Aspect

  • Kirk Degiorgio sure likes a good melody. His previous 12-inch on Planet E, 2010's Membrane, was rammed with them. Similarly, this new one, The Golden Aspect, shows off the Brit's penchant for strong leads. The eponymous track steps off with a chain of gooey synth tendrils. Rapidly panning left and right, they seem to grasp alternately at each ear, until Degiorgio throws in a firm bassline and gets some more balance. The low-end sounds like those found in electro house circa 2005 (if the saw wave fetishists had shown some restraint and good taste, that is). Degiorgio keeps his bass firmly understated, letting dawning synths gradually unfurl throughout the track's length. "I Hear Symphonies" is more celestial, its synths shining with a blinding intensity rather than slinking cautiously around. Most of the action comes about via the use of filters. The strongest lead, for instance—a sort of rapid morse code bleeping—is rarely static, ever moving to a sharper or blunter incarnation of itself. So too with the roughened arp which skulks somewhere at the bottom end. Considering the length and tension of the break, it all might be quite anthemic, but for the sheer messiness of it. There's nothing to latch onto; just a big mass of fleeting melodies.
