Trevino - Discovery

  • Marcus Intalex continues to prove his Trevino output is no fluke with another essential EP, this time on his own Revolve:R imprint. Read interviews with the Manchester man, and you'll learn he puts this new burst of creativity down to a recent switch in software to Ableton. Listen to any of his music and that may surprise you: "Discovery" rolls and rolls like a prime and fulsome cut from analogue enthusiasts Skudge, its underlapping sub bringing warmth and glide to the introspective little tinkle of keys which hang in the air above. "Tweakonomics," meanwhile, is a searing acid wig-out that sounds straight from the heart of an aged 303. "Lag" is more steppy thanks to a taut-as-you-like bassline which repeats over and over. All sorts of machine-made lines fill in the spaces, variously folding in on themselves or bursting out like noxious rays from some post-apocalyptic fire. They slowly build in intensity before breaking like waves, and infuse the remainder of the track with a wash of introspection. Though tense and steely, there's plenty of heartfelt heat cocooned within each track here, even on the ketamine-slurred synths and screwface bass of "Shorty"—a writhing, decaying melange of drum & bass, dubstep and everything in between.
