Der Dritte Raum - Zweitakt

  • It was a long time coming, but Der Dritte Raum have just now opened a label, almost two decades after their career first began. Broadly speaking, its initial record, Zweitakt, resembles bits of Dominik Eulberg's recent work. There's such copious amounts of soaring melody that you'll find yourself wondering whether these four tracks are really techno, and not some kind of neo-trance instead. The title track's bassline is irrepressible as it bounces in time with gleeful chords, for instance. Similarly, the arpeggiated waves which ripple through "Auf Wiederschön" impart the same warm, contented vibe as those found in Eulberg's "Der Tanz Der Gluehwuermchen." In "Der Illusionist," rubbery bass and tinkling piano are paired with flourishing snares for a particularly innocent-sounding atmosphere, and even "D'Akkord," with its weighty, robotic toms and wiry vamps of synth, is lifted by elated notes in the final half. The simplicity of these four pieces no doubt contributes to the mood, too. More often than not, melodies are synchronised with percussion or bass, rather than operating in the gaps between them. The results are not lacking in charm, but at the same time, they make Zweitakt feel less like a renaissance for the duo, and more like rote continuation of a trajectory plotted many years ago. The problem is, the world seems to have changed course several times in the interim.
