Cottam - Relapse

  • A year on from his first release for Will Saul's ever-reliable Aus, Paul Cottam returns with some bubbling, emotive techno, led out by "Relapse." It's built around a military-style snare which soars and recedes in a Shepard Tone formation, accompanied by muted, heavily-delayed trumpets and swirling acid keys. Taken on by Romanian techno stalwart Cosmin TRG, it's twisted into pitched-up, jacking techno—albeit with a somewhat soft underbelly—courtesy of some idiosyncratic, nimble-fingered keyboard work, sweeping synth skirls and express train hi-hats. Cottam adopts a more loose-limbed approach to the congo-driven house of "I Remember." There's acidic hints on show again, albeit more restrained and at a lower register than on "Relapse" and they're counter-balanced by elegant two-note synth swells. It's a pretty end to a good-looking EP from the Lancastrian producer.
