93 Feet East Vol 1

  • Chances are that if you’ve been down London’s Brick Lane you’ve caught a DJ/live set at 93 Feet East, one of the capital’s most rewarding venues for alternative music. Like the Lane itself anything goes and there’s a refreshing lack of pretension, qualities that come over well in the first release of their new record label. Some of the choices here are obvious but nonetheless welcome – Lemon Jelly’s humorous chill-out ‘A Tune For Jack’, Tutto Matto’s uplifting ‘LMF 3’ and the fighting talk of Blak Twang’s ‘Kik Off’. Delve deeper though, and there’s more to enjoy from The Bees – you couldn’t get a sunnier tune than ‘A Minha Menina’ – and the deeply fashionable Playgroup with ‘Make It Happen’, one of Trevor Jackson’s best moments. Other stalwarts include Mr Scruff, Tim Love Lee, Gonzales and The Phones, whilst Annie’s ‘The Greatest Hit’ still funks a treat. A good party double then, with the hope that subsequent releases will go deeper underground.
