DIVA – Paris Stabbing

  • Little is known about New Kanda's latest signing, DIVA—unsurprising, given Adam Marshall's tendency to cloak his label's operations in mystery. Stating the project draws inspiration from the flair of American soul sirens such as Loleatta Holloway and Jocelyn Brown, this debut release comprises two lengthy productions and an alternative version of the title track. "Stabbing Paris" opens in a climb of arpeggios that soar over an orchestra of rippling hardware. Epic and visceral, the competing components make for an arresting eight minutes of Detroit-inspired techno. Whereas the crowded original version is coarse and loaded with alarm, the shortened "Beats" rework is stripped down and sparser. At the expense of the original's climatic tension, this results in a more fluid and versatile alternative. Maintaining the same raw-edged texture yet overall more retrospective, "But I've Never…" paces to a rigid house beat lined by ethereal vocals, analog pulses and a whistling drone of feedback. In a word, killer.
