Anthony - The Last True Rebellion

  • Through a succession of limited CDr albums, Belgium's Other Heights label has explored the point where oceanic dub techno evaporates into gauzy ambient. Their white label 12-inch series, meanwhile, is more grounded on the dance floor, showcasing a selection of fine international techno, from Szare and Helix through to Basic Soul Unit. As label aesthetics go, it's a tricky one to pin down, but if there's a unifying quality it's a taste for dark, cavernous atmospheres—a pattern that's carried through in this debut from Anthony. This is deeply psychedelic music; music to glaze over to on a 5 AM dance floor. "The Last True Rebellion" trades in eerie stasis and subtle textural changes, its gaseous, faintly dissonant synths circling over a thunderous kick drum. "Freedom From The Tyranny Of Fashion" is even more bracing, basically a single saturated part that swells and swells with no let up. As the mix is gradually overwhelmed by squalls of synth and a barrage of shakers and hi-hats, the kick comes to seem almost like an afterthought. It's an intimidating listen, but once you penetrate the forbidding surface it can yield rich rewards.
