Bodyjack - Bodyjack

  • Chris Finke, the 10-year resident of Birmingham's Atomic Jam parties and boss of Flux Recordings, hasn't been particularly creative in naming the first EP from his new label and alias, Bodyjack. This should give some clue as to his intent, though. Neither of these cuts pushes the envelope. They are, however, absolutely guaranteed to jack bodies. The title track is a slab of Chicagoan techno that ripples and struts with all the grace of a Muscle Beach meathead. Its bass ricochets between drums clogged by grit, while an air-raid klaxon is clattered with snare rolls. It's a very dumb record. But it's also massively powerful, the kind of track that could either rescue a flagging floor or fill up the smoking area. "I Wanna Be" is, if not subtler, at least more nimble. Again there's a thrusting, hulking bass. Again there's an almost comical rave reference—here, a whistle's trill arrives just after an Amen-driven breakdown. But again, its idiocy is charming.
