Jay Shepheard - High Way
There's an unfussy vibe about Jay Shepheard's approach to house music. Following early success with Compost and Buzzin' Fly in the latter part of the '00s, he's concentrated on building the profile of his own Retrofit label in recent years. He here steps out on Catz N' Dogz's Pets Recordings with a debut on the label that's bursting with dance floor nous. On "High Way" that means a high stepping, disco-specked march that pivots around rich, growling bass and a chirpy vocal sample. "Won Ton Crystal" is the one programmed to do most damage, however. Bristling with fizzing hi-hats, tumbling snares and a fidgety bassline, its faintly off-beat tempo lifts it out of the ordinary.
