  • After picking up blog heat through a handful of self-released EPs, Numerology has signed London-via-Barcelona producer Jeremias Carroza for his label debut. Those early releases were rhythmically playful—ratcheting footwork collapsed into 2-step and mournful dubstep, and Carroza's 4/4 moments had a frantic, Lone-like feel. Though not particularly slick, they at least showed a producer willing to take risks. Carroza's first signed release is a more professional affair, but the experimental edge has been purged for something tediously on-trend. Both tracks target the du jour deep house and jungle revivals, taking genres that, at their best, fizz with danger and sexual energy. The result, though, is something as carnal as a sex ed teacher rolling a condom onto a courgette. "Lost Origins" is awash with the kind of pads and bulbous basses that in Omar-S's hands feel perilous and exciting, but in Carozza's they're pillowy and personality-free. The same problem hobbles "Jungle Exchange." Its breakbeats and stabs are like child-friendly versions of something once rough and aggressive, Fisher Price jungle with the metal edges exchanged for plastic.
