Northern Structures - Crossing Bridges

  • Northern Structures' latest EP is a four-tracker called Crossing Bridges. Like the previous three records from the Copenhagen duo of Lasse Buhl and Troels B. Knudsen, this one comes through Adam X's Sonic Groove. It's mostly par for the course: gritty, DJ-friendly techno that's balanced with a little space and restraint. The best of the three harder-hitting tracks is "Eastern Bridge," a ruthlessly effective 4/4 cut with pile-driving percussion and ghastly atmospheric stirrings. "Eastern Structure" is a lean, moody stepper topped by terse synth riffs. "Northern Structure" is another rock-solid 4/4 track that checks all the right boxes stylistically, but sounds a little too similar to previous efforts (I couldn't help thinking of their first record, Self Similarity). Overall, the most intriguing moment here is "Northern Bridge," which has a deep, introspective vibe (and a drawn-out intro and outro) rarely summoned by the duo. Its stripped-down, slightly swung drums don't charge forward like usual; instead, they're a foundation for tense, trebly synth tones and discretely tweaked-out effects.
